New Video: Future of Forestry – Little Drummer Boy

As promised, here’s “The Little Drummer Boy”, a video from the Future of Forestry Advent Christmas performance in Tigard, Oregon.

I’ll post another song when I can. There are two dates in the Seattle area listed this weekend. One on the 12th at Kirkland Church of the Nazarene and one on the 13th at Aurora Church of the Nazarene.

Review: Future of Forestry Christmas Advent Concert

Unfortunately, my grandfather died this week. I’m off to California to carry the casket, and his body, to its final resting place. It is a sad day for my family. Knowing that Future of Forestry was coming up to Seattle for two Christmas concerts was exciting, however, family is always first.

That said, my wife and I decided to drive down to Portland where Future of Forestry and Josiah James are having 3 Christmas concerts. Since I won’t be seeing the ones in town, I’m reviewing the one in Oregon.

In short, this is a must-see concert. The instrumentation is amazing and the quality of music craft second to none. Eric makes it very clear that he is a musician of the highest caliber. With him are an array of extremely talented people: A Ph.D. candidate cellist, a man who, it appears, can play just about any instrument as well as old label-mate Chris Short from Lost Ocean. Along with them is a brilliant bassist and … well, even Josiah gets in on a few songs.

I can’t recommend this show highly enough. From the beating drums to the soft interstitial melodies, there isn’t a minute wasted on useless guitar solos or meaningless vocal decoration. Every moment is used to build a musical monument to Christ our King.

There are two dates in the Seattle area listed this weekend. One on the 12th at Kirkland Church of the Nazarene and one on the 13th at Aurora Church of the Nazarene. Yeah, I know Toby Mac is in town with the Winter Wonder Slam, but hey, Toby will be back. This event may never happen again.

Bring your friends, bring your family, brings the kids, this is a family event no one will forget. I’ll be posting some video up tomorrow with more plugs for the concerts! You’ll see that without a doubt, it’s worth every cent of admission.

Review: Lybecker @ Q Cafe

It was quite a night. The drinks were well made and there was plenty of parking. After Justin Klump stepped down, the main act took the stage. Lybecker, with their eclectic mix of try-something-different and straight rock, started with a tuning problem; it haunted the bass player’s acoustic the remainder of the night. That said, it didn’t ruin the set.

The acoustics were not the best for a live rock performance; The Q only seats 30 to 40 people and the room is more coffee shop than club. Often, it was hard to hear the lyrics. Considering the CD was new and I hadn’t heard the songs, it left me straining to hear against the drumer’s iPod driven beats.

After the initial frustration, however, the catchy melodies finally caught my ear … and since listening to the CD the songs are pretty good. Despite having to hold a camera, the banter and acoustic numbers did lift the set above the initial slump that night.

Here are two songs from the set. For the first, I’ve mixed in some of the CD audio to clear up the melody (you may notice). Enjoy!

Review: Justin Klump @ Q Cafe

It was quite a night. The drinks were well made and there was plenty of parking. Right before Lybecker‘s set, Justin Klump and his violin sidekick took the stage. I was surprised at the skill of both musicians as well as how practiced the songs sounded. Quality has to be the best description of their set; You could really feel the emotion flow through the music, giving a deeper meaning to the already rich lyrics.

This is an act I would definitely drop by a coffee shop to see again.

BTW: You can hear some of the coffee shop sounds in the background; I think it gives it ambiance.
